As described in my last post, I will be giving kudos to some of my favorite bloggers every week. The first blogger that I will be highlighting is Maddie Grant. Her blog is titled Diary of a Reluctant Blogger, and she is described as an “association blogger.” Her role currently is Administrative Director at Washington Center for Psychoanalysis but her insight and intellect does not stop there. Maddie’s writing covers social media, Web 2.0 and 3.0 within the association industry.

I had the priviledge of meeting Maddie Grant in Washington D.C back in January at the 2008 ASAE Technology Conference, and she is a very warm, and charismatic individual. I have Maddie’s site on my RSS, and enjoy reading her posts each time. Myself, someone being only about a year with experience of social media within the association industry, has gained a significant amount of knowledge through Maddie’s insight and education.
I could go on and on about Maddie, but I want you to check her out, so please go to her site, add her to your RSS, add her to your Twitter. If you are interested in anything pertaining to social media, web 2.0, etc, and not only within the Association industry, please, I am telling you, she is the one to read!

Over this past year, I have gotten into reading more blogs and articles on the internet. It has been a great way for me to learn more about social media, Web 2.0, music marketing, and any other interesting piece of information out in the world today.
I would like to highlight each month, maybe each week a different blogger or expert that I find intriguing and intelligent. I feel like I gain so much knowledge, and try to refer to articles in my blogs, but never get enough of a chance to do so. So hear goes… and please give me your comments if you currently are a fan of this blogger / writer, or if you have any other insight.

It has been awhile since I have written, yes, but I came across an interesting article highlighting that the Leukemia and Lymphona Society is offering gift cards for gas for fundraising for their Light the Night walkers event. For every $250 raised, they will receive $15 in gas cards.
In the article, on Acronym on the ASAE Center website, by Kristin Clark, it proposes the idea of people just volunteering for the “gifts and prizes” or for the real meaning behind the event. Quotes from an officer of the nonprofit organization, Nancy Klein, LLS chief marketing and revenue officer,
“The goal of finding cures and helping patients is a great motivator, in and of itself. But with gas prices so high this summer, LLS saw this ‘Save at the Pump’ promotion as a great added incentive to do something good and get something good!”
Personally, I feel that this could be a good way of getting people in to volunteer, especially if organizations are short staffed for volunteers, but also agree that you want to make sure that volunteers have a good purpose for signing up to be a volunteer of a non profit. It might be a cause that is close to your heart, or one that involves someone in your family. Nonetheless, you should be volunteering to help, and not get a free gift. Once an organization can attract members with these free gifts, they should use this as the time to educate the cause, and build a community.
How do you feel about nonprofits giving away free items, such as a gas and other items? Have you been involved in a volunteer situation like this? I am interested in hearing what other people think.

Twitter…do you know what it is? If not, you may want to know pretty soon as you don’t want to be the last one to know a new social media trend!

Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to send “updates” (or “tweets”; text-based posts, up to 140 characters long) to the Twitter website, via short message service (e.g. on a cell phone), instant messaging, or a third-party application such as Twitterrific or Facebook.
Yeah, maybe it use to be “techy” or “geeky” but it has become more popular than ever, has started to become mainstream, and will continue to become even more popular all around.
They recently launched a new site section called “Explore” for external and third party tools that interact with Twitter and a new visualization tool called Twitter Blocks. Twitter Blocks is a real-time visualization tool for recent updates from a user’s friends and their friends’ network of friends (and their friends’ friends’ network of friends, etc.).
Another interesting aspect of Twitter is Twitter Packs, which is list of areas of interest or locales, and you can self-select people you know who would be (in your estimation) someone others might follow. Maddie Grant posts this list in the idea of associations to jump on board and use Twitter for their members. I think its genius!
So why not? Go grab an account and start twittering!
